The story is based on the life of a japanese composer named Yuji Koseki from Fukushima in the Showa Era.

In 1909, a long-awaited baby boy was born to a family which has run a dry goods store for generations in Fukushima Prefecture. He would later become the talented composer Koyama Yuichi who wrote many famous songs. Although Yuichi was brought up as the heir of the business, he was rather dreamy and considered a child with no redeeming traits by the people around him. However, when he encountered music, it sparked joy and unleashed his gift in composing music through self-study. As a youth, Yuichi secretly put his name down for an overseas songwriting competition. This would change his destiny. He won runner-up for the song he entered for the competition. As a result, he got to know a female student who wanted to be a singer. Despite the long distance between them – Fukushima and Toyohashi – the two of them tied the knot. When they came to Tokyo, they met all sorts of people and weathered a dark period to produce a number of hit songs. However, war broke out and Yuichi had to compose wartime songs at the army’s request. It pained him that young men died in battle after singing the songs he had written. After the war, the country began to recover amid the chaos. The couple made a new era of music in an attempt to encourage the wounded through the power of music.

Kakeda Satoshi is a student of an engineering college’s department of science and engineering. He has been fascinated by since since his childhood and is an oddball who gets engrossed only in what he is interested in. Kakeda has shown no interest in love even after he got into college. The two of them share a two-bedroom apartment and the finer points of two men living together comes up at the dining table every day. Although the two of them have been in a relationship for three years and Shiro's parents know he is gay, Shiro never shares the fact that he is gay or Kenji is his partner to anyone.

Kakei Shiro is a 45-year-old attorney who works for a small law firm and lives with his lover, Yabuki Kenji, a hairdresser.

Kakei Shiro's regular routine is that after work, he buys groceries at a mart, which has discounted prices and does not go over a certain budget. Afterwards, he goes home and makes dinner, which usually includes rice, soup and three side dishes. When dinner is about ready, Yabuki Kenji comes home from work. While they eat, the two men talk about pretty much everything.

One day, when Kakei Shiro and Yabuki Kenji are out in public, Kenji's customer comes up to them and asks, "Is he your boyfriend who is a lawyer?" Kakei Shiro is embarrassed. Unlike Kenji, who is open about his sexual orientation, Shiro does not tell people at his law firm that he is gay.
