Eighteen years later, Yan remains haunted by the memory of Ka Ming, trying to regain what she had with him in part with her husband and and in part with her lover, but finding neither a complete replacement for her lost love breaks with them both. Troubled she loses track of time while alone in the wilderness, sparking a missing persons alert which becomes the catalyst for the four friends to meet again. Though she was Ka Ming's girlfriend all four band mates were in love with her and the three survivors remain in love with her.

    During the time Hong Kong was under British rule, there was a dark age when corruption and bribery were the order of the day. Chinese Chief Inspector Lak (Tony Leung Ka-fai) together with his gang, Unicorn (Anthony Wong), Gale (Eason Chan) and Gold (Wong Jing) laundered massive sums thereby making Hong Kong an empire of graft. Whenever they failed to apprehend the felons, Unicorn would get innocent victims, like Bong (Alex Fong), to admit to the crimes. Gale had nine "wives", all of them were actually mistresses of other constables, only Lily (Kate Tsui) was loyal to him, but Gale was fascinated by the female drug lord, Rose (Liu Yang). Lak was found having an affair with Unicorn's mistress (Natalie Meng Yao). Unicorn beat up Lak and was demoted to stand guard at a reservoir. In the early 1970s, the Governor of Hong Kong decided to clean up the police force. The ICAC was established, whose operation branch was headed by Yim (Bowie Lam). Bong and Unicorn also joined the ICAC. Despite threats of violence and intimidation, they managed to bring about the downfall of the empire of graft.

    After the death of her husband, Chu Pik Ha returns to her maiden home with her son, in a deliberate attempt to take over the family jewelry business from her elder sister Chu Pik Wan. Hing does not follow her instructions, but instead secretly helps Ha tackle her problems one by one. Wan soon comes to realize that Hing has never really got over Ha. Wan's younger sister Chu Pik Lam is still attending school and is too young to deal with such family issues. Wan feels a profound sense of helplessness and becomes even more frustrated when So Lai Sheung turns up suddenly claiming to be a mistress of her late father and pregnant with his baby. Out of respect for their father, the sisters agree to put Sheung up for the time being until the situation becomes clearer. Shortly thereafter, Ha discovers that Sheung is just a tool of Sang guy who has been plotting to wage a battle of will against the Chu's.

    Yan Ting was framed for murdering her husband Yuen Man San in Taiwan and was jailed wrongly for five years. Because of her good conduct while in prison, she was freed earlier and returns to Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, she meets a kind-hearted lawyer, Lo Lei Ho, and begins working in his law office. Besides finding her son€'s whereabouts, she is also trying to make up for what she has done to her family. On the other hand, she spots Man San in the busy streets of Hong Kong. At first she has doubts, but time after time makes her realize that perhaps Man San is still living. San, who is now married to Chiang Nga Yi, is trying to win the acceptance of her father. Surprisingly, Suk Lan returns to Hong Kong from America and also claims that she is San'€™s wife. Unexpected events after events reveal San's true identity to the other characters, and to prevent exposing his true identity, deaths are followed by deaths
