The film is based on the life of a samurai named Nakamura Hanjiro who was involved in the Meiji Restoration along with Saigo Takamori and other prominent men. Set during the waning days of the Tokugawa shogunate, it depicts Hanjiro’s rise from a low ranking samurai to one of Saigo’s most trusted men due to his generosity and excellent swordsmanship.

When the rest of the kids at school break up for their summer holidays, Masao (Sekiguchi), a young lad who lives with his grandmother, finds himself home alone. With nothing better to do, he sets off to visit his estranged mother in Toyohashi, whom he has not seen since he was a baby. Meanwhile when Kitano's clueless reprobate, the unemployed mobster wannabe Kikujiro, finds himself hanging around at a bit of a loose end too, he is sent off packing by his wife with 50,000 Yen in his pocket to escort the young scamp and make sure he is delivered safely.

Sasaki Kojiro (1585 - April 14, 1612) also known as Ganryu Kojiro) was a prominent Japanese swordsman, born in the Fukui Prefecture. Kojiro's favored weapon during combat was a straight-edged nodachi with a blade-length of over 90 cm (3 feet) long. As a comparison, the average blade-length of the regular katana seldom surpasses 70 cm. It was called the "Monohoshi Zao" (Clothes-Drying Pole, often translated into English as "The Drying Pole" ). Despite the sword's length and weight, Kojiro's strokes with the weapon were unnaturally quick and precise.

In this dramatic portrayal of the real-life gambling boss Jirocho, a good-hearted and honest boss sets out to take revenge for a fellow boss. At the same time, the other local bosses, in a bid to increase their own power, plot to dispose of Jirocho.

It’s no holds barred when famed Boss Jirocho of Shimizu squares off against rival bosses who have conspired against him in their effort to take over his territory along the Tokaido Road. The alliance of Jirocho and Nikichi must stand tall against all odds when the uncle of one of the Shimizu gang’s relatives is murdered and his wife abducted by a jilted suitor who belongs the Takei gang and the Shimizu gang searches far and wide for him. The action heats up when fire rips through a farmer’s home, breaking Jirocho’s orders to not harm the common folks.

While on the road, famed Yakuza Boss Jirocho is falsely accused of starting a peasant's uprising and chased by the law. Mean-while, one of his henchmen in an attempt to raise money for the Boss gambles away not only all their funds, but their clothing as well. Jirocho, famed for his honesty and integrity must take on the challenge of rival gangs while trying to elude the government's officials at the same time. Things really heat up when the most famous of all Yakuza Bosses, Chuji of Kunisada gets involved. Will he team up with his old friend or is gang warfare about to erupt?
