Aoyama Takashi is a salesman who works in a company that exploits him. At first excited about finally gaining employment, he soon finds that his life as a salaryman is miserable. He is berated and hit by his superior, and forced to work unpaid overtime. Depressed and convinced that his joyless life is not worth living, Aoyama tries to throw himself in front of a train. However, he is saved by Yamamoto, a cheerful guy who claims to be Aoyama's childhood friend. Aoyama's life begins to change because of Yamamoto, but when he starts digging into Yamamoto's identity, he realizes that Yamamoto is not entirely what he seems.

But Hoshino Hideo (Abe Tsuyoshi), the detective partnered with her, is known for being a skirt chaser. When Takako curtly rejects his advances, she is abruptly treated indifferently. He also reports an important clue that she had found as his own achievement. This makes Takako shake with anger. To make matters worse, Hoshino orders Takako to act alone in a violation of rules. She has no choice but to do legwork on her own. As chance would have it, Takako locates the new address of men who are believed to be a gang of criminals and heads to the house. During the investigation, Nakata Kaeko (Nishida Naomi), a housewife who was a victim in a previous bag-snatching case, appears. Takako knows her. Kaeko is going through a hard time. She has to care for her elderly father, but is also the sole breadwinner instead of her unemployed husband, juggling two jobs as a nurse and part-time employee at a bar while raising two children. Unable to leave Kaeko alone after Kaeko talks about the emptiness she feels every day, Takako follows her. But she gets drugged with sleeping pills and kidnapped by the hidden criminal … … Meanwhile, former fellow detective Takizawa Tamotsu (Takahashi Katsumi) is unable to contact Takako and worries about her. He presses Hoshino for an answer but Hoshino does not confess the truth. He finally pins down an apartment from a small lead and breaks in with Hirajima Maki (Shinoda Mariko). However, they discover the body of the criminal who has died in cold blood down there. Takizawa tries to find new clues, but Takako’s own life is in danger with each passing moment

Kasahara Sachiko’s (Kitagawa Keiko) parents died young and she lives in a Tokyo apartment with her only sister Nobuko (Koike Eiko), a journalist for a newspaper’s cultural department. She has not found a job and has been interviewing at a number of companies. On this day, Sachiko bids farewell to Nobuko who is leaving for a holiday at Lake Towada in Tohoku, and sets off for another company interview. This should have been the usual scene of the two sisters who share a close relationship. But that night, Sachiko gets news that Nobuko was killed in an accident, and for some reason, Nobuko lost her life in Nagano which is a different place from what she had told her. Nobuko’s colleague and fellow journalist Yoshii Ryoichi (Mukai Osamu) suddenly shows up before a grieving Sachiko. He sets out to investigate the mystery of Nobuko’s death together with Sachiko, but she does not know his true intentions. Meanwhile, Sachiko starts to work at the newspaper as her sister’s replacement and goes to meet the cultural figures that Nobuko had been in charge of when she was alive. Among these people with habits which are unimaginable from their glamorous appearances, is the pediatrician Nishiwaki Mitsutaro (Sawamura Ikki) who writes a column for the newspaper. He seems to be the greatest philanderer in celebrity circles even though he has a wife (Nishida Naomi), and calls Sachiko out many times. But right after that, Machida Tomoe (Sakai Wakana), who had been her sister’s colleague in the same department, commits suicide. She leaves behind cryptic words for Sachiko regarding Nobuko’s death. “There is someone who should take responsibility”, “All the more if it is a famous person”. Sachiko’s hunch is that her sister’s death is connected to someone prominent that she had been dating while alive. However, the more she attempts to learn the truth, the more “suspects” meet suspicious deaths one after another until she no longer knows who is her friend or foe. Sachiko has unwittingly been sucked into a deep darkness as if she is wandering about in a dark, dense sea of trees with no exit.

Satake Junko has been arrested as the main suspect in the serial killing of 5 men. The news is making sensational headlines in variety and talk shows too. April 4, 1959 in the early morning Detective Fujisawa Rokuro of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) was walking his dog along the banks of Tokyo's Musashino district, and found the body of a young woman. Her handbag, an express delivery envelope, and other possession were stil with her, her identity was immediately confirmed as airline stewardess Ikuta Setsuko. Initials her death was considered a suicide due to the visual evidence of a lack of struggle, and the peaceful expression on her face. Upon further examination the cause of her death was determined as suffocation. semen was also found at the scene leading detectives to believe the crime occurred shortly before the body was found.

Fujisawa unable to forget the peaceful expression on Setsuko's face makes a direct appeal to the head of criminal investigations. He is order to work in combination with young detective Ichimura Yoshitaka. Fujisawa is the ace of the MPD, but he tends to go off on his own and that sometimes gets him into trouble. Manager Takaku Ryo takes it upon himself to monitor Fujisawa and Ichimura's behavior.

Eventually it is discovered that a blue Renault with a foreign license plate was seen one the night of the incident near the crime scene. The owner of the blue Renault, a young preist,mis found the be the sender of the express envelope found with the body. The young priest is the prime suspect, but this situation could become an international problem if handled incorrectly. One day while Fujisawa is on a stake out at the Church of Villiers were the young priest preaches a mysterious woman comes and speaks to the Chief Priest. The atmosphere around her seems to repel people.

The murder of Emili, a young girl, leaves the inhabitants of a small Japanese village in shock. The raped body of Emily is found by the four classmates with whom she was playing. The murder is never solved. Emili's mother Asako is torn by grief and puts a curse on the four girls when they claim that they don't remember the killer's face. Each of the girls, in their own way, will do their penance for their silence. Deeply struck by the words of Asako and burdened with her curse, the four girls are forced into adulthood which eventually triggers a tragic chain of events.
