Drama series depicts the lives of three men born in 1987 and oppose irrational things of the world through work, love and friendship. The men are from the Yutori generation when the Japanese government reformed the education system emphasizing a pressure-free environment referred to as Yutori education.

Since Masakazu’s (Masaki Okada) father passed away, he lives with his mother, older brother, older brother’s wife and younger sister. He studied hard in his school days and began working for a good company after college. He has worked in different divisions. This spring he is assigned to a bar franchise his company owns.

Kazutoyo (Tori Matsuzaka) is a elementary school homeroom teacher. His teaching style, derived from his own Yutori education, draws the ire of the school and parents. He is connected with a female university student who arrives at the school for teaching apprenticeship.

Maribu (Yuya Yagira) was born from an elite family. In his school days, he did well in his studies and sports. He applied for admission to Tokyo University, but was denied. 10 years later, he is now married and has a baby. His family still lives in a small place. Even though he is in a difficult financial situation, he is still trying to gain admission into Tokyo University.

In the chaos of the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate, two young men bound by the bonds of firm friendship stand by their convictions as they try to create lives for themselves, walk the path they believed and die in the course of destiny. Ibuya Majiro (Ichihara Hayato) is a boorish, low-ranking samurai who serves the Hitachifuchu domain. The single-minded Ibuya lives for justice and is loyal to the shogunate which is on the verge of collapse. In contrast to Ibuya, Tezuka Ryoan (Narimiya Hiroki), a fine doctor of Western medicine, is usually an irresponsible womaniser, but a compassionate person who would go all out for his patients...

10 years ago Hide (Hiroki Narimiya), a college student, meets Yuki Gakuko (Yuki Uchida), an older woman, through work. They become lovers with Hide falling hard for Yuki Gakuko. The following year, Yuki abruptly announces one day that she is going to marry another man. This devastates Hide. Hide eventually finishes college and finds a job, but his yearning for Yuki leads him into depression and alcoholism.

Meanwhile, Yuki is involved in a car accident and suffers a life altering injury. Now, 10 years later the two former lovers come across each other once again. They are both shells of their former selves ...

The Homeless Student is a film adaptation of a national best-seller autobiography novel "The Homeless Junior High School Student". Koji Namiki, a talented young pitcher, who had won the National High School Baseball Championships enters university, but soon afterwards injures his elbow. He and his teammates work hard to get back on the field placing all his hopes on a new slow-ball, "the magic pitch." However, the outbreak of WWII wipes out the baseball ambitions from everyone. They join the military and in the navy undergo the severe training that prepares them for death.
