Based on the same-titled novel by Raymond Chandler, the drama is set in Tokyo, in the 50's. Harada Tamotsu was suspected of murdering his wife, the actress Harada Shizuka. He then fled to Taiwan and had apparently committed suicide over there. However, Tamotsu’s friend Masuzawa Banji, who works as a private detective, has doubts about Tamotsu’s death, but the incident is hushed up by Harada Heizo, a powerful media mogul. Soon after, Masuzawa is pulled into another case involving the neighbors of the Harada family, a drunk novelist Kamiido Joji. His investigations lead him to a publishing company editor, Haneoka, and to the sister of the murdered Shizuka, Takamura Yoshino. Most but not least, he is introduced to Joji's beautiful wife, Aiko, who seems to be the key to both the cases.

The private detective and Takada investigate further and they soon comes across a mysterious woman named Saori (Koyuki), a mob boss named Toshio Kirishima (Toshiyuki Nishida) and four murder cases ...

News comes out that several people found 1 kg of solid gold in their mail boxes. Yamabuki Maya moves back to her hometown and surprises the movers by the amount of money she gives them.

After settling in her hometown, Maya one day takes the city train and sees former high school classmate Michigawa Tamotsu driving the city train. He tells her wistfully that he initially hoped to drive trains all around the world, but is now resigned to driving the city train. Several days later, Tamotsu receives a package from Maya with money and a map of the world railway system.

She meets him at a party to which she was taken by a subordinate at work. He is 25-year-old Ichiro Kashiwakura (Okada Junichi) and is nothing out of the ordinary. They start a relationship. One day, out of the blue, Ichiro ardently proposes to Haruko. Realizing that he really loves her, Haruko says yes and they get married. But she still hasn't told him her real age.

An icy-cool pop idol, Sakuraba Yuuichiro, is actually a happy-go-lucky smiling idiot. After falling in love with Sakura, trouble ensues after agreeing to marry into Sakura's family, which consists of her 3 sisters.
