Taking the hotel on Linsen North Road in Taiwan as the background, it is a realistic drama that describes the love and hatred between the Japanese-style hotel proprietress and Yang Jin Hua in 1988 and a group of amorous ladies under her.

When she was twelve years old, Chen Meiru begins to develop her own fantasy about her love, and sketches a drawing of her "prince", Ji Ba Bi Lun into her diary. When she turned twenty four, the prince she drew descended from the heaven and landed right infront of her. The diary back then, turned into an incantation that travels through time; and Chen Meiru gets entangled into an epic tale of love and hate that transcends 3700 years.

Hao Yun, a vet at a private clinic, leads a mundane life until he accidentally discovers the world is inhabited by monsters. Worried about the secret of their existence leaking, monsters capture Hao Yun and attempt to erase his memories. When their attempts fail, Hao Yun is forced to join Monsters Bureau, where he solves cases involving monsters with the help of his new partner, Wu Aiai. As Hao Yun dives deeper into this new world, he learns that even monsters must deal with the mundane struggles of everyday life and the entanglements created by human emotion.

The story is set in early 20th century. Country girl Cassia is sold as a maid to a Shanghai brothel, where Madam Shin considers her a no- count big foot with big breasts. But Cassia soon becomes the favorite of the triad Lord of Hong Men, Chang Lixiong - the Lord of Shanghai. Leaving a meeting with Huang Peiyu, Leader of Chinese Revolutionary League, Lord Chang is killed and Cassia is left alone and helpless. She is expelled to the countryside, where she gives birth to a daughter. After years of hardship, Cassia returns to Shanghai to scrape by with work in a local opera troupe. Under the patronage of the second generation triad Lord, Huang Peiyu, she rises to stardom in the Shanghai Opera. But when she discovers that Huang was implicated in Lord Chang's assassination, she persuades Yu Qiyang - who had served as attendant to both lords - to plot the murder of Huang and succeed him.

He Yun Cai, a deaf girl, fell in love with Chu Yong Xiu, a new doctor volunteering at her grandfather's small clinic in Hokkaido. When a family emergency called Yong back to Taiwan, he promised to come back for her. When he didn't, she went to look for him. She discovered that he had lost his memory in an accident. And, there was a woman claiming to be his girlfriend. Although she was saddened by the discovery, she stayed to care for him. Her selfless devotion deeply affected Yong's brother, Chu Yong Tuo, who never experienced unconditional love. He decided that he would do anything to win over her love.

The current owner of Golden Chicken, Li An An, is determined to sell her family restaurant to the highest bidder. Unfortunately, there is no buyer. She is forced to stay put and try to restore the restaurant back to its former glory. As her family story has it, a hundred years ago the restaurant became famous for a chicken recipe invented by a pair of star-crossed lovers who wanted it to embody their love. However, the recipe has gotten lost through generations and the restaurant was not the same anymore. Now, it's up to her to recover the lost recipe of love.

Seven boys form a tight knit gang lead by Yen. They drink beer, smoke cigarettes and ride motorbikes: behaviour pretty much typical of teenagers. The movie is focused on exploring the nature of their friendships and how they change through time.

Although this is predominantly a film about male relationships, the role played by Xiao Yun (Yen's girlfriend) is interesting. Just as the boys struggle to come to terms with the world and their expectations, Xiao Yun struggles to break free from her relationship with Yen. Tang, Yen's best friend, fancies Xiao Yun but never has the courage to tell her. In the end Xiao Yun shows more courage than Tang in dealing with the relationship. The movie shows the difficulties both men and women face in their gender roles.
