Set in a garden, the "Wind's Telephone" is a white phone booth with a black telephone placed in it. The phone booth is not connected to any telephone lines or wires. People come here to talk to those that passed away or are missing. During Haru's journey, she meets various people.

In 2030, AI is everywhere including the medical field, finance, and security. Artificial intelligence has become essential in people's lives. People have come to completely trust AI, but an artificial intelligence system suddenly spirals out of control. Kiryu Kosuke's NOZOMI system begins to go amok. When high school student Tomura Naoki met piano tuner Itadori Soichiro at his school in Hokkaido, he could smell the forest from the piano tuned by Soichiro. Kota (Satoshi Ono) is an ordinary young man. He has a good family, including his father who always supports him, his mother who enjoys cooking and his older sister with her bright personality. He also has a girlfriend named Etsuko (Fumino Kimura). Kota wants people to eat delicious foods made by him and he begins a job as an apprentice chef at a restaurant. One day, Kota suddenly passes out and is sent to the hospital. Kota is diagnosed with malignant lymphoma by Doctor Murayama (Kyusaku Shimada). His life and his family's life changes after that. He has to spend an extended time at the hospital and he meets people there who also change him. With chemotherapy he overcomes his malignant lymphoma. But then, Kota has a relapse and he only has three months left to live. His family desperately tries to hold him.

The film is concerned with the lives of the Haruno family, who live in rural Tochigi Prefecture, the countryside north of Tokyo. Nobuo is a hypnotherapist. He teaches his son, Hajime, Go. Hajime becomes an excellent Go player, but he has a rough time with girls and puberty. Yoshiko refuses to be an average housewife, and works on animated film projects at home. She uses assistance from Grandfather Akira, an eccentric old man who is a former animator and occasional model. Eight-year-old Sachiko periodically sees a silent, giant-sized double of herself which mimics or benignly watches her. She contemplates ways to rid herself of it. Uncle Ayano is a sound engineer and record producer who comes to stay for a visit. He engages in inward reflection, seeks closure regarding an old relationship, and recounts a childhood experience- a tale which influences Sachiko and ties into later events.

Machiko has difficulties in coming up with an idea for the manga series and decides to go to the nearby Momochi Seaside Park. She watches the ocean and comes up with the idea for manga series "Sazae-san".

Koji Namiki, a talented young pitcher, who had won the National High School Baseball Championships enters university, but soon afterwards injures his elbow.
