Two passionate archaeologists - Professor Wang (Gao Yuqing) and Cao Xinxin (Yang Xinying) will not miss the opportunity to explore underwater tombs of the Nanjing. Their third companion Qi Xiaobai (Liu Guanlin) hasn’t useful skills but adore risk and dangerous journeys.

One night at his apartment, Sang Hoon hears a woman's scream. He looks outside his apartment and sees Tae Ho hitting a woman with a hammer. Sang Hoon and Tae Ho then make direct eye contact. Sang Hoon does not call the police. The next day, that woman is found dead. Detective Jae Yeob investigates the case. Sang Hoon is still terrified and does not tell Detective Jae Yeob about what he witnessed. Soon, another resident who witnessed the same murder is killed by Tae Ho. Sang-Hoon tries to protect himself and his family from the murderer.

The Hashimoto Family no longer eats meal together at the dining table or spends time together in the living room. Michiko yearns for a different relationship with her family and is gradually overcome by loneliness. While feeling pressured from the trifling matters that occur within the residential community, Michiko tries to fill the emptiness that she hides in her heart.

The mood of Hai shang chuan qi is sentimental, atmospheric, and bittersweet. The plot centers around a reunion, city life, and social differences. It is a foreign, documentary, and historical movie. In approach, Hai shang chuan qi is serious and realistic. It takes place, at least partly, in an urban environment. The setting is China. Hai shang chuan qi happens in the 19th century and in the 20th century. The film received praise at the Cannes Film Festival.
