Jeong Eun works as a technical administrator at a company with severe discrimination against women. Not only she is waiting to be assigned, but also she is dispatched to work with a subcontractor. Despite the blatant pressure to resign, Jeong Eun plans to hold out and return to the head office. However, the conditions working for the subcontractor, working on large transmission towers, are also challenging. No matter how tough Jeong Eun is, it is not easy to overcome dual discrimination. She has confronted discrimination with assertive attitude, but she could not easily adapt to the new subcontractor environment. The reason she goes to work drunk or claims to be ‘dispatched from the head office’ and not a subcontractor worker is because she wants to protect her vested rights as a ‘prime contractor.’ However, she changes as she learns the work out of pride and establishes human bonds with her coworkers. Then those who considered Jeong Eun as an annoyance start accepting her. The film smoothly captures the process of finding the identity of Jeong Eun as a woman and as a subcontractor worker.

Ooejo agricultural high school is located in Hokkaido. Most students are from families involved in agriculture and their dreams are to continue working in agriculture. Meanwhile, Yuugo, who graduated from a prestigious middle school, applied to the Ooejo Agricultural High School just because the school has a dormitory. Yuugo, who grew up in the city, finds himself in an unfamiliar environment at Ooejo Agricultural High School, surrounded by nature and animals. Yuugo is also the only one who doesn't know what type of career he wants to pursue. Yuugo becomes impatient. He goes through struggles everyday, but he he also gets to know the other students and rural life in general. He begins to grow as a person.

Directed by Hou Hsiao Hsien, the movie is an adaptation of a short story from the Tang dynasty that tells of how a young girl who was kidnapped and transformed into a lethal assassin. While on a mission she is highly taken by Liu Chang Yi, and decides to provide him with her loyalty.

In the feudal Japanese society, men could easily divorce their wives whereas wives had great difficulty to exercise the same act. Many women found solace at a women’s Buddhist temple in Kamakura named Tokei-ji, where, after two years of servitude, their husbands were forced to sign divorce papers. The three inns located in the area beneath the temple functioned as the front offices, with Tokei-ji accepting only women who have been approved by them first.

The year is 1841. Tokugawa Shogunate has issued sumptuary regulations as part of Tempo reforms, making the lives of common people even worse. Nakamura Shinjiro is a literary writer and doctor-in-training, residing in Edo. In light of the recent events, Shinjiro escaped to an inn at Tokei-ji temple which is run by his aunt, Kashiwaya Genbei.

Jogo is aiming for Tokei-ji in search of a divorce from her abusive husband who is exploiting her for the family business. Ogin is a former courtesan who has abandoned the love of her life, a wealthy merchant, for some unknown reasons. The two women come across in their journey to Tokei-ji. There, Jogo and Ogin meet Shinjiro, his aunt and the others who are trying to help the women with various ideas to start a new life.
