The film, which is based on a true story, is about an adopted son who is searching for his biological parents in South Korea. During his search he meets his real father, a condemned murderer on death row. Daniel Henney plays the lead role of James, who works as a volunteer in the United States armed forces in Korea. He asks questions of why his father is on death row and finds out things that he always wanted to know. Then he finds more and more truths unravel about his father and his life.

The release of the film inspired controversy because the family of the father's victims did not support its production. In its first week on release it topped the South Korean box office sales charts.

The adopted son on whom the story is based is Aaron Bates, a licensed insurance broker for his family's insurance brokerage, Insurance Services of America. He lives and works in Arizona and is raising two boys of his own with his wife.

There are three stories in this film. Story one, the Tang Dynasty. The people of Ray County like to eat wild animals all day long to harm the living and kill the evil spirits, so much so that the blood and water in the meat market soaked into the ground all year round to attract 'evil things' to occupy and cannibalize their young children to harm their neighbors, the whole county was in fear. The peace of the people on one side of the river is guaranteed. The second story is about the Ming Dynasty. One day, the young master's unrepentant ways and uncontrollable waste of grain crops caused widespread discontent among the peasants, who dared not voice their anger. The third story is about the Republic of China. Mr. Yang, a tycoon, prefers sons to daughters and spoils his young son, making his daughters jealous.

While he works there and learns how to surf, he picks a fight with a typical rich kid Seong Min on a lineup. They agree to settle a fight with a surfing match where the loser has to leave the sea. While Joon Geun trains with the help of Welcome Guesthouse season members, his advisor calls him and says there is a job interview on the day of the match. Joon Geun can’t make up his mind between the match and the interview and the clock is ticking.

The story is set in 9th century China and tells the story of Nie Yinniang who was trained in martial arts from a young age. She is the daughter of Nie Feng, a general under Tian Ji'an, the ruler of the de facto independent fanzhen of Weibo.
