Based on Asano Atsuko's best-selling novel, Battery is all about youth and baseball. Ace pitcher Harada Takumi forms a pact with a new friend on the baseball team and strives to win the big game for his younger brother, who is terminally ill.

Kaoru is a 17-year-old virgin who has an S&M fetish. He has always dreamt about an SM relationship with his childhood friend Nana, who is looked upon as perfect and is always the target of boys' eyes. Their relationship has somewhat deteriorated through the years, due to them hanging out with different people and because Kaoru is not taking his education too seriously.

One day though, Kaoru's mother gives some of his S&M toys to Nana for safekeeping - Nana finds the leather one-piece that Kaoru bought and tries it on but accidentally locks herself in it and doesn't have the key!

Kaoru frees her of the one-piece, but then Nana realizes she may like Kaoru's hobby more than she thought and subsequently the two of them start engaging in so-called "breathers". These breathers are intended to relieve Nana of stress, stress originating from her attempts at keeping her grades and her name perfect.

The different couples are each played convincingly by Shu Qi and Chang Chen. A blessing in disguise. The film was planned as a trilogy to be made by three directors. When the production could not be completed, the Taiwanese master decided to make all three parts himself. As a result, Hou forced himself to film three different stories in three different ways, so the viewer is treated to an unparalleled display of versatility. The three stories are situated in three different periods. And each time, Shu Qi and Chang Chen play the female and male leads in a tragic love story. The first part, A Time for Love, is closest to Hou's previous work and is set in the 1960s, in his youth. It is a very contained melodrama in which each detail falls into place. The last part, A Time for Youth, is set in today's Taipei. It shows the city as a hotspot, supported by the calming music of Lim Giong. This music and his mood will also be presented live by VJ Sunny Hu at the festival. The middle section, A Time for Freedom, is set furthest in the past and could be described as the tour de force of the three. It is set at the beginning of the 20th century, during the occupation of Taiwan by Japan. It has the style of a silent film from that period. Not entirely planned: the real reason was that the actors had trouble speaking classic Mandarin. Another blessing in disguise

Shikoku Island, the fourth largest island in the Japanese archipelago. Matsuyama, a historical, quiet town facing the serene inland sea 1976,after the turmoil of years of student demonstrations, there came a time of nihilism. The new generation was given the nickname "Age of Three Nothings" signifying "Giving nothing, caring fornothing, being moved by nothing". Etsuko (15) lives with her reticent father and hard-working, fussy mother. They run a little dry-cleaning business. With them is Etsuko's grandmother who looks after the house and her 'brilliant' older sister who is leaving to attend a top college. Etsuko feels useless, with no role to play in the household. The irony is that even though she is far from being an excellent student, she still managed to get into the best local high school. The emptiness of this achievement only worsens her sense of futility. One day she decides to run away from home. Her family don't flinch, assuming she just went out for a walk. Despondent and alone, even this gesture ignored, Etsuko stands on the sea shore and stares out across the waves. In the distance, she caches sight of something it's a rowing team gliding through the water. At that moment something sparks inside her. She can't get this image out of her mind and sets her heart on joining the rowing team at the new school. However she finds out that since it used to be a boys' school, traditional attitudes persist: there is no rowing team for girls. In a solution to all her recent frustrations with life, she decides to do something about this. She bullies four other girls into forming a team. With their hearts not really in it however, their season ends in a humiliating defeat. Further burdened by the appearance of her childhood sweetheart on the boy's team, she begins to flounder. An awkward relationship with their melancholic coach followed by an injury that bars her from sport, threaten to wreck Etsuko's self-confidence. Just when it seems she will have to give up all that she struggled for, she finds it in herself to continue."Rowing is everything for me", she says. By the second reason, the girls have grown. With one voice they pull their oars through the water, heading for their first victory.
