In the early twentieth century, Russo-Japanese War veteran Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto scratches out a meager existence during the postwar gold rush in the wilderness of Hokkaido. When he stumbles across a map to a fortune in hidden Ainu gold, he sets off on a treacherous quest to find it. But Sugimoto is not the only interested party, and everyone who knows about the gold will kill to possess it! While patrolling the Honjo area, Heizo Hasegawa encounters his old dojo companion and close friend, Samanosuke Kishii, as well as Hikoju of Sagami, a ruffian from Honjo. Samanosuke informs Heizo that the daughter they once admired, Ofusa, has been divorced and is now married into the household of the villainous lord, Jubei Matsuoka. When Hikoju investigates the circumstances surrounding this lord, it becomes clear that there are connections to the mentor of Heizo and Samanosuke from their youth, as well as revelations of wrongdoing.

Superstar Nakamura Kinnosuke takes on three separate roles in three short stories by noted author Yamamoto Shugoro who wrote the novels that were adapted into Sanjuro, After The Rain, and the two Dojo Challenger movies, Samurai From Nowhere and Samurai From Somewhere.. 1. Hiyameshi: A younger son of a modest family, often referred as "cold rice", strives to realize his dream of leading an independent life. Too poor to form his own branch, he is relegated to hand me downs from his three older brothers and his collection of rare books having given up on marrying the girl of his dreams. 2. Osan: Carpenter Santa travels throughout Japan in search of his missing wife, whom he had left after she called out another man's name during climax. His journey is complicated by when he encounters other men who may know where Osan is. 3. Chan: Driven to drink as times have changed and people no longer care about quality craftsmanship, poverty stricken brazier maker Jukichi must find ways to make money for his family. Offers have come to join the more modern company started by former comrades, he tries to balance the pride of craftsmanship against his responsibility to support his family.

The story centers on Takako, a beautiful and professionally successful woman who has recently ended a very serious romance, and has burned out on seeking love. However, when Takako realizes that she is already in her 30s, she suddenly decides to get married, and begins registering on dating sites.

Shibahara Jun is a high school student with high expectations for swimming, but as the team coach's son he is nicknamed 'Taiikukan Baby' (Gymnasium Baby) and no one believes his position is due to his own merits. Jun also must deal with constant rumours that his father got his late mother pregnant—who was one of his students—and never married her, another reason why he is so nicknamed. After being diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, Jun is forced to quit swimming and loses all reason to exist. Shortly after, Murai Naoki, his replacement in the swimming team, asks Jun to be his coach since he admires him a lot. Jun and Murai start to spend time together, and Murai soon confesses his love for Jun and kisses him, a fact that leaves the latter confused. Jun tells what happened to his best friend, Kato Shoichi, who takes an overprotective attitude towards him and another defensive towards Murai, since he is also in love with Jun. Both boys swear a mutual rivalry that starts a complicated love triangle.

Asami Inaba is a temporary worker at a company. One day, her boyfriend leaves his smartphone in a taxi. Since then, mysterious things take place around her like her credit card bill having charges she did not place. She gets involved in a big case.

The film centers on Iwao Shishido, who at age forty suddenly leaves his rural village, but returns with a foreign bride during his father's funeral.

This is adapted by director Keisuke Yoshida from Hideki Arai’s 1990s manga series with the same title.
