A coastal city in Brazil. Kai arrives from Taiwan for holidays with a broken heart. A broken air conditioner sends her into Fu Ang’s umbrella store. He could become a friend, but the rainy season doesn't arrive and his shop disappears. While looking for Fu Ang, Kai discovers the story of Xiaoxin and a group of Chinese workers in a posh skyscraper. Kai finds herself strangely mirrored in Xiaoxin’s tale.

Matsuoka is a teacher at a culinary school. One day, a student, Tashiro, says something strange during the lesson: “There’s a noise, it’s like a chime. Someone is sending me a message.” The people running the school warn him that Tashiro’s a little odd, but Matsuoka isn’t bothered by it at all and continues treating him normally. However, on another day, Tashiro says, “Half of my brain has been replaced with a machine,” and takes drastic action to prove it. Some days after the incident with Tashiro, Matsuoka is teaching a female student, Akemi. Matsuoka continues teaching unenthusiastically but when she complains that a whole chicken leaves her feeling uncomfortable, something incomprehensible overtakes him. Both at the school and at home, a strange dread begins to undulate in his ordinary existence…

29-year-old Me Sook is the most unpopular teacher at school. She used to be a Russian language teacher at a high school but was relegated to a middle school to teach English which she can't even understand. She also has a chronic blushing problem, often afraid to even lift her face up. But to top it off, she is in love with another married teacher, Mr Seo, and believes that he feels the same but is just too shy to show his feelings.

So when she finds out that he's having an affair with an attractive Russian teacher who took her place in high school, Me Sook decides to take action. Hiding her true intentions, she forms an alliance with Mr. Seo's daughter, Jong Hee, the most unpopular student at school. Jong Hee cooperates with Me Sook to save her father's marriage. They plot ways to separate the lovebirds, becoming friends in the process and also slowly falling into their own trap.

At the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty, Liu Qi, the son of Zhongliang, guarded a crumbling pass in the middle of the desert and declared his place "refuge". Set during the end of China's Cultural Revolution in a small village in Yichang City, Hubei Province, a pure love unfolds between beautiful city girl Jing Qiu and handsome young villager Lao San. Ichiko lives at her parents' home. She rarely hangs out with other people. Things change when her younger sister divorces and moves back with her child. Ichiko and her sister's relationship goes bad, causing Ichiko to move out and live alone. What brings happiness to Ichiko is to watch a middle-aged boxer practice at a boxing gym. The boxing gym is located between the 100 yen shop where she works and her home.

One day, Ichiko and the middle-aged boxer meet and they begin to live together.

Makabe Rokurota (Hiroshi Abe), a loyal retainer of Princess Yuki-hime (Masami Nagasawa), has been commissioned to transport Yuki-hime and Akizuki's ample treasury of gold bars safely to the politically stable Hayakawa. They disguise themselves as humble firewood peddlers, hiding the gold bars inside the logs they are carrying so as to pass safely through roadblocks set up by Yamana, which is under the control of Takayama Gyobu (Kippei Shiina), whose attire bears a striking resemblance to that of Darth Vader.

Along the way, Rokurota comes across Takezo (Jun Matsumoto) and Shimpachi (Daisuke Miyagawa), who have escaped from forced labor in a gold mine. Takezo and Shimpachi first frown on joining the journey, but eventually agree to help out in the hope of escaping Yamana's oppression and cashing in on the gold reward Rokurota offers them.
