Shen then travelled to France for a work-study program and formed the "Xiang Cai Alliance" with Cai He Sen who later became her husband.

In 1921, Xiang Jing Yu returned to China and was elected as a member of the Central Committee. In 1925, Xiang Jing Yu led and organized the May Thirtieth Movement. After the failure of the Great Revolution, Xiang Jing Yu insisted on staying in Wuhan. In 1928, she was arrested and executed. She was only 32.
